The Fall and Rise of Pandemic-Era Retail Real Estate

COVID-19’s impacts have spelled disaster for the retail sector. First its risks kept people from wanting to go out to the mall, and then the wave of necessary but unpleasant governmental shutdowns removed the option. Now, however, the retail world is on different footing. Vaccines are being rolled out and the end of the outbreak, though not yet around the corner, is on the horizon.

In this report, we investigated how retail landlords are handling the crisis and the considerations they need to make as we begin to emerge from it. We explored lease issues, rent collection, debt obligations, and omnichannel order fulfilment. Additionally, we took a deep look into the strategies, adaptations, and resilient tenant types that retail property owners may want to consider embracing as we begin to emerge from the pandemic, and face a new world of retailing.
